ἔγ-γονος, ὁ, der Enkel, bes. in sp. Prosa üblich, wie Dion. Hal. 6, 37 u. Inscr., wo es zuweilen auch »Urenkel« bedeutet; ἡ ἔγγονος, die Enkelinn, Plut. Pericl. 3. – Uebh. = Nachkomme, Dem. 19, 48; Inscr.; abstammend von, πυρὸς ἔγγονε Ἔρως Alph. 3 ( Plan. 212). So bes. τὰ ἔγγονα, auch von Thieren, Arist. Pol. 7, 16; Ael. V. H. 1, 6; Plut. Vgl. ἔκγονος.

Inscrr. up to ca. 300 B.C.; ἔγγ- is rare in Hellenistic Greek, OGI49.12 (iii B. C.), PTeb.124.25,33 (ii B. C.); but more freq. later; ἐνγ- is written in SIG333.25 (Samos, iv B.
